The Minister visited Hamble-based laser company Fianium Limited, who recently won £4.2 million worth of government-led investment as part of the Regional Growth Fund.
The investment is expected to lead to the creation of nearly 100 new jobs, as well as helping the company invest more in their products.
Local MP Mike Thornton and Danny Alexander MP were treated to a tour of Fianium’s facility, and were given a preview of the company’s exciting plans for the extra investment.
Fianium produces lasers that can be used to build smartphones, digital music players, e-book readers and even for eye-surgery. As well as the Hamble base, the company also has offices in the US, China and Japan.
In July this year it was announced that three Hampshire-based companies had beaten off stiff competition from around the South East to net £20.6 million of new investment as part of the Regional Growth Fund, which is set to create 731 new jobs.
During the visit, Hamble’s MP Mr Thornton and Mr Alexander MP also visited the largest employer in the Eastleigh constituency, CooperVision. The company employ 1500 at their Hamble site.
Commenting on the visit, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said:
"The Regional Growth Fund was established to support jobs outside London, in order to help rebalance the British economy and make it more resilient.
"It’s been fascinating to learn more about how Fianium’s plans will benefit the local economy and bring nearly 100 jobs to the area."
Commenting, local MP Mike Thornton said:
"The operation Fianium has developed here in Hamble is really impressive. They are a gold-standard example of the ground-breaking work being done by companies across Hampshire.
"Thanks to Danny and the Lib Dems in government, the Regional Growth Fund is allowing companies like Fianium to grow their businesses, helping to create hundreds of new jobs in the area. We are doing the right thing by investing across the country to create sustainable growth, driven by our local employers.
"Already the Regional Growth Fund has made a real difference in our area, helping to build a stronger economy in a fairer society. Today’s visit is another reminder that the Lib Dem campaign on creating jobs is working."
