Eastleigh Borough Council

Liberal Democrat-led Eastleigh Borough Council is considered to be one of the best run councils in the country. It holds "Beacon Status" and as such is officially recognised as an example of best practice for other local councils to follow. Successes of the Borough Council include:

  • A successful door-to-door waste recycling scheme giving Eastleigh Borough Council one of the highest rates for waste recycling in the country. In the year 2004/5, the Borough Council met its target of 33% of waste being recycled. The Borough Council has also successfully trialed a garden waste collection service which will be expanded to cover the whole borough in the coming year.

  • Raising its share of Council Tax by just 1% for 2005/6, and guaranteed that Council Tax will not be increased by more than 1% BELOW the rate of inflation for the next three years.

  • Introducing the new Nitebus service to make returning from Southampton City Centre to Eastleigh Borugh on weekend nights safer, easier and a lot cheaper. The Nitebus has been so popular that larger buses have had to be introduced.

  • Proposed a new local development plan which will ensure that any new housing is built within our existing towns and villages rather than on greenfield sites. This is in response to tough new housing building targets from the Labour Government, and is the best protection that our local countryside has ever had from developers.

  • Supported the creation of the Eastleigh Music Festival, which has successfully brought many famous performers to Eastleigh, such as Jools Holland, Rolf Harris, The Levellers, The Saw Doctors and Bob Geldof.
