HUHNE SAYS WATCH THE LABEL TO AVOID A CHEMICAL HANGOVER FOR NEW YEAR

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 28th Dec 2006

Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne today warned New Year's Eve revellers to avoid drinking wine containing the preservatives known as 'sulphites' to avoid starting the New Year with a chemical hangover from hell.

Although sulphites are a known allergen which can cause symptoms from raging hangovers to - in extreme cases - death, they are still present in many wines. In the vast majority of bottles produced before law changes in 2004, there is not even a warning on the label if they do contain sulphites.

Commenting Chris Huhne MP said: "The last thing people need to start the New Year is a chemical hangover from dodgy booze. Yet many wines contain additives that can cause serious allergic reactions.

"Worse, vintage wines that have been set aside for a special occasion are unlikely to even warn drinkers about the risks on the label. One of the best ways that New Year's revellers can be sure of avoiding a miserable New Year's Day is to buy organic wines, which don't contain added sulphites.

"There are some world-leading organic English wines which could be a great way of seeing in the New Year and avoiding stacking up 'wine miles'.

"Of course, bingeing is likely to cause a sore head regardless. But avoiding sulphites will help ensure it is not the hangover from hell.

"In the longer-run, it's clear that wine bottles labels should list all ingredients, not just allergens. Drinkers may not be so keen on sophisticated wines if they know they contain clay, egg whites and gelatine.

"I have written to the European Commission demanding urgent action to ensure consumers are better informed about what ends up in their bottle."
