Lib Dem poster shows potential for huge gains across Britain2.30.10pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 4th May 2005
Eastleigh Lib Dem Chris Huhne unveiled a last minute poster in the heart of Eastleigh today to underline the potential for large gains for the party across Britain. "Eastleigh has been a pioneer in voting Lib Dem" said Chris. "Where Eastleigh has shown the way over the last eleven years, other areas will now follow". "This map shows how many other areas could go Lib Dem tomorrow if people vote think we can win in their area. Too many people voting Conservative and Labour are doing so out of fear of the other party, and the Lib Dems give a real chance for a positive vote. We are the real alternative". Chris pointed out that the trend of the opinion polls showed an increase in support for the Lib Dems, the only party to have gained in the opinion polls and now at the highest level ever during a general election. By contrast, the Populus tracker poll in the Times showed the Conservatives sinking below their level at the last election. "All the indications are that tomorrow is going to be a historic day for the Liberal Democrats if our supporters come out to vote" said Chris. However, Chris warned that Eastleigh was still a very marginal seat where it would be a close fought contest to the last hour. "Our canvass returns suggest it is going to be neck and neck in Eastleigh between me and the Conservative because of David Chidgey's retirement. David has been a highly respected MP who has done a lot for Eastleigh, and I can only promise to do my best to follow in his footsteps".
