Smashing Success of Recycling Scheme5.09.17pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 4th Feb 2005
A trial glass collection service has proved so popular the Council is looking to extend it to more Borough areas. Since its introduction to 20,000 Borough households in December the service has collected and sent for recycling over 180 tonnes of glass bottles and jars. Residents on the scheme are issued with a collection box for the glass which is collected monthly and taken to Midland Glass at Southampton for repressing. The introduction of the two year trial was possible through Government funding but now the Borough Council is looking at plans that could extend the service to a further 10,000 households this summer. Lib Dem Executive Councillor for Environment, Louise Bloom, "Once again the Borough's residents have made an excellent recycling effort and the glass collection service has proved really successful. Extending the scheme to other areas of the Borough will certainly help Eastleigh achieve its 40% recycling target rate by 2006." Areas likely to be included in the extended collection service are West End, Fair Oak, Horton Heath and parts of Bishopstoke.
