CCTV is to be Extended to More of Eastleigh

Eastleigh's CCTV network is about to be extended to 60 cameras.

Work is expected to start next week on the installation of an extra 12 cameras which will be linked to the Town's extensive 44 camera network.

The new cameras which will take up to 10 weeks to install will monitor the main pedestrian route from Wells Place along Factory Road and in to the new residential development on the former Pirelli site.

The £190,000 scheme has been funded by developers contributions and provides coverage from the new residential areas to the shopping centre as Lib Dem Chair of the Eastleigh Local Area Committee, Councillor Steve Sollitt explained, "The cameras are designed to reduce still further the fear of crime and to encourage people to walk from the new development into the town. The new scheme will also help the police in reducing anti-social behaviour and vehicle crime. The introduction of CCTV to the Town Centre has had a significant impact on reducing the concerns and fear of crime amongst visitors and residents. The Town is now perceived as being far safer than it was seven years ago and a recent survey shows that there is high support for the scheme."

The Town Centre's CCTV scheme was first introduced in 1997 with 12 cameras and has been extended since then. It covers the main shopping streets and rear service roads, the town's car parks, railway and bus station, taxi rank, Leigh Road Recreation Ground and The Point. It also covers the shopping centre at Hedge End.
