Local Lib Dems help guarantee more money to tackle local flooding problems3.33.11pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 6th Dec 2004
Local Lib Dems on Eastleigh Borough Council have succeeded in efforts to get water regulators to put more resources in to repairing sewer systems in Eastleigh Borough, according to Eastleigh North Councillor Chris Thomas. OFWAT, the regulatory body for the water industry, have agreed that Southern Water should receive more money over the next five years to help with the repairs and renewals associated with many of the regional antiquated sewer systems. Cllr Thomas chaired a Scrutiny Committee in Eastleigh Borough Council that over the last few years have regularly lobbied OFWAT and Southern Water to improve the state of the Borough's sewer and drainage systems. Councillor Thomas says: "We are delighted that our efforts have helped contribute to water companies receiving this extra money. There are a number of areas in the Borough that are affected by sewers flooding in times of heavy rainfall. One of the areas identified by Southern Water Services for repair is Merdon Avenue." He added, "It is hoped that this new money will result in improvements to many local sewer systems and that incidents of future flooding are greatly reduced."
