Patch Up For Borough's Bumpiest Road

9.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 4th Sep 2003

The borough's bumpiest road - Twyford Road leading north out of Eastleigh town centre - is to be patched up to remove one of its worst subsiding spots.

Hampshire county council says that the general condition of Twyford Road does not yet merit a wholesale resurfacing, but it has appointed contractors to smooth the biggest bump opposite a new housing development.

Chris Huhne MEP, the prospective parliamentary candidate for Eastleigh, took up residents' complaints about the road with the County in August, has received a firm promise that work will be undertaken in early September.

Mr Huhne recently visited Twyford Road to see the problems both of the road surface and of speeding traffic with local Councillor and executive member Chris Thomas and MP David Chidgey (pictured here by the speed camera warning sign in Twyford Road).

'Twyford Road is undoubtedly the bumpiest road in the borough' said Mr Huhne. 'Though I am disappointed that the county is not yet ready to give it the full revamp it needs, at least the worst spot of subsidence should now be remedied'.

'At present, driving down Twyford Road is like undergoing an MOT test for suspension. It is not for the faint-hearted' said Mr Huhne.
