Mike celebrates 150 years of football in England

The Football Association celebrated its 150th anniversary and, with the First Round of The FA Cup, Mike Thornton MP took the opportunity to get his hands on The FA Cup.

"Football has come such a long way since that first meeting back in 1863 which created the first laws of the game.

"Today the game plays a huge part in the lives of millions across the country and it’s great to see so many people in the Eastleigh and Southampton area enjoying the game – especially with the Saints doing so well in the Premier League, and Eastleigh flying high in the Conference South.

"I know football fans up and down the country will be keeping a close eye on results in the FA Cup and dreaming of the final at Wembley in May next year."

Mike Thornton was invited to join England Manager Roy Hodgson and FA Chairman Greg Dyke at a special event in parliament to celebrate this landmark anniversary and learn more about how The FA supports football in England.

In England there are seven million players of all ages and backgrounds who regularly play the game, as well as 400,000 volunteers, 300,000 coaches and 27,000 referees.
