Liberal Democrat candidate for Eastleigh, Mike Thornton today joined campaigners to praise the Pupil Premium, a cash investment in schools to give Eastleigh pupils a fair start in life.
The Liberal Democrat policy has already:
· Put an extra £1.7m into Eastleigh’s local schools, which targets money at the most disadvantaged children, raising standards for everyone
· Allocated more than £100,000 for catch-up classes for Year 7 pupils in Eastleigh’s local schools
Mike Thornton visited Crestwood College for Business and Enterprise this morning and met with Headteacher Krista Dawkins. The College has benefited from more than £126,500 in extra funding through the Liberal Democrat’s pupil premium and catch up premium.
Conservative Hampshire County Council has caused a crisis in school places, with one in five children not being allocated to their school of choice.
Only Liberal Democrats can be trusted to give every child in Eastleigh a fair start in life.
Commenting, Mike Thornton said:
“So much of a child’s future is decided at school, so it’s essential we do all we can to make sure everyone has a fair start in life.
“We all know children who struggle, but with this money we can help those in the class who are falling behind to catch-up. This helps the whole class move forward together, faster.
“I’m delighted to be part of the Liberal Democrat team investing almost £2m in Eastleigh schools - schools which did so much for my family.
“As a parent in Eastleigh I know how important this extra funding will be for parents and teachers here.”
