Today (Thursday 6th June) local MP Mike Thornton joined people across Hampshire in giving up food for the day to draw attention to the fact that 1 in 8 people around the world go hungry every day.
The event is one of many happening around the country, called ‘The Big IF Fast’, organised by the Enough Food for Everyone IF campaign. This coalition of over 170 charities and faith groups is working together to demand changes to the food system that will benefit hungry people. Participants of the event in Hampshire added their names to a petition to David Cameron, calling on the G8 to take immediate action on global hunger when it meets later this month in Northern Ireland.
Eastleigh MP Mike Thornton said: "Everyone needs food to eat, it’s one of those basic things in life. We take it for granted that food will be available, and fasting today is the least I can do to remind me that millions wake up every morning with little or nothing to eat. I really believe that those in power will make the right decision IF we work together. We can all play our part by backing this campaign - go to www.enoughfoodif.org to find out how you can help.”
