Eastleigh MP Mike Thornton visited an innovative eco project event where local groups showcased ways to have a cleaner, greener, healthier and cheaper lifestyle.
The free 'Eco Eastleigh' event, organised by Eastleigh Borough Council, was held at the Wells Place Centre, and included a great range of exciting activities, exhibitions and workshops, supported by local transition, transport and food groups.
Electric bikes and cars, an eco dollhouse, a giant snakes and ladders board and a pedal powered smoothie machine were just some of activities on offer.
Mike Thornton praised the event for its creativity, and said his own ‘green’ pedal powered smoothie was certainly worth the effort.
Mike Thornton said: "Our own local weather environment wasn’t too good today so this was a great chance for families to take shelter in the Wells Place Centre and see the many exhibitions and stalls, as well as to enjoy the varied stalls."
"While children had lots of fun pressing buttons on the eco dollhouse and playing on the giant snakes and ladders board, the event was also a great opportunity for local people to learn more about the green economy creating more jobs, and how they can save money on their energy bills and do their bit for the environment."
Local MP Mike Thornton is pictured here making his very own smoothie by riding the specially designed bike.
Mike is also pictured here in the ‘cloud’ installation, showcasing a range of local school children’s entries to an Eco Art Competition. The children each designed a cloud with their thoughts on the environment, which were hung from the ceiling at the event.
Notes to editor:
‘Eco Eastleigh’ was organised by Eastleigh Borough Council (Giles Gooding on 023 8068 8274) and backed by local organisations including Marwell Wildlife, Sainsbury’s, VUE Cinema and B&Q.
The event also offered free bike checks from the ‘bike doctor’ and a chance for residents to find out more about how to save money by cutting their fuel bills through the Solent Green Deal, a scheme designed to enable homeowners and tenants to make energy efficient improvements to their homes with no initial installation costs.
