The number of people claiming unemployment benefit has now dropped to just 947 (1.7%) in the Eastleigh constituency, official employment figures published today reveal. The figures represent a 27% fall in those claiming Job Seeker Allowance at the same time last year.

Eastleigh MP Mike Thornton has hailed the good news, and has called on local employers to keep the momentum going.
"We are making fantastic progress locally, helping people get back in to work, into apprenticeships, and onto the job ladder."
"2310 new apprenticeships in the last three years, unemployment down by 27%, and government-backed major investment in local companies like GE Aviation and SPI Lasers meaning more jobs and apprentices: the Liberal Democrats in government have taken big steps towards building a stronger economy.
"Now we have to keep this momentum going. The Federation of Small Businesses has said small businesses are looking to take on more staff, and nationally we are campaigning to create a million more extra jobs. I know Eastleigh and Hampshire as a whole can play a big part in achieving this."
